“The other side to war” 2023

Born and raised in Sumy, Ukraine I am forever inspired by my country's history and culture. My work consists of three components; pots, sculpture, documentary photography and film. All three may reach a different audience to further influence their full effectiveness. These three avenues of making are a direct reflection on the current full-scale invasion by the Russian Forces in Ukraine. The color palate of the wall sculptures is a reference to the muted, earthy, camouflage atmosphere of war. The mark making and textures I assimilate mimic the visual evidence of destruction overlapped with imagery of a society that has adapted and endured these realities. Pottery is a way for me to marry craftsmanship, function, and aesthetics to the essential aid to the conflict through fundraising platforms.  They usher a sense of familiarity as vessels for sustenance, at the same time assist broken homes, families, and objectively help save a life. Through the effectiveness of photography and film I strive to remind the western viewer of the full-scale war going on in Europe. To expose the contrast between my daily routine and freedom, to that of a war-torn country.  Through these ways of making, I aim to spread awareness, to share stories, be of service, and help deter the ever so common war-fatigue.
